This Melbourne-based small business has developed new automation systems incorporating robotics for the pharmaceutical and manufacturing industries with financial aid from the Federal Government's R&D Tax Concession. Through innovative design, as well as manufacturing and installation of their systems, Andrew Donald Design Engineers is helping to give Australia's manufacturing and pharmaceutical industries the tools they need to compete head to head with international competitors.
This innovation requires a significant level of research and development, and would not be financially viable without financial assistance. Since 1998, Andrew Donald Design Engineers has benefited from the financial aid of the Federal Government's R&D Tax Concession. Dale Collinson, the company's general manager, stated during an interview with an AusIndustry representative, “By its very nature, research and development can be a risky business because not all projects will be successful, which is why the R&D Tax Concession is such a help. The innovations we come up with can often benefit many companies. By rolling out good concepts, we are helping many people.”
Through the company's automation systems and robotics, its business customers are able to hold their own against companies in Switzerland, Germany, the United States, and China. Andrew Donald Design Engineers helped one Australian manufacturer win back business previously lost to a Chinese competitor due to price. Andrew Donald Design Engineers created a system that allowed the company to continue production unmanned throughout the night, greatly reducing costs and allowing the company stand competitively in price against the Chinese company. “Winning business back from China was definitely a big step for this manufacturer, and it is something we are very proud of because we were able to help a local manufacturer compete overseas,” Collinson said during the AusIndustry interview. This is just one of many ways the company's innovative research and development has helped Australian company's compete in the global market.
The company's successes are due in large part to the Australian Government's R&D Tax Concession, which allows the company to deduct 125% to 175% of the cost of research and development expenses on their tax returns. This tax concession frees up significant capital necessary for the further research and development. Approximately half of the company's clients are in the manufacturing industry while the other half are in the pharmaceutical industry. Some of the more notable success stories of Andrew Donald Design Engineers include developing a stand alone pressurised leak detection system for pharmaceutical finish lines, helping a small Victorian business compete with both US and Chinese competition to manufacture a component for an Australian-made care, and designing inspection and monitoring systems for drug containers.
Andrew Donald Design Engineers business is based on using innovating automation systems and robotics to help other Australian businesses gain an edge in the global marketplace. With the financial assistance they receive from the Federal Government's R&D Tax Concession, they have found the capital necessary to help other Australian companies succeed.
